The Problem

30 cables where 3 would do

Most installations run one cable per device back to a central point. In a 3-storey home with cameras, access points, and intercoms, that means 20-30 UTP cables choking through the riser. It is messy, expensive to install, and a nightmare to maintain or troubleshoot. There is a better way — professional infrastructure that reduces riser cables from 30 to 3, speeds up your backbone to 10Gbps, and makes future expansion trivial.

Common Questions

Network switch FAQ

What is PoE (Power over Ethernet)?

PoE delivers both data and electrical power over a single Ethernet cable. Instead of running a separate power cable to each camera, access point, or VoIP phone, the switch sends power through the same UTP cable. PoE+ (802.3at) provides up to 30W per port — enough for most cameras and WiFi access points.

What is the difference between managed and unmanaged switches?

Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play with no configuration — suitable for simple setups. Managed switches give you control: VLANs to separate traffic (cameras on one network, WiFi on another), QoS to prioritise video streams, port security, SNMP monitoring, and SFP uplinks for fiber connections. If you have more than 10 devices or multiple floors, you almost certainly need managed switches.

What is SFP and SFP+?

SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) is a modular slot on managed switches that accepts fiber optic or copper transceivers. SFP runs at 1Gbps, SFP+ runs at 10Gbps. Fiber SFP modules allow you to connect switches between floors or buildings using thin fiber optic cable instead of bulky copper bundles — one fiber replaces dozens of copper cables in the riser.

How many cameras can one PoE switch power?

Divide the switch PoE budget by the power draw per camera (typically 12-15W for a standard IP camera). For example: the ES210GS-P has 120W budget ÷ 15W per camera = 8 cameras. The ES228GS-P has 370W ÷ 15W = 24 cameras. Always leave 10-20% headroom for power spikes during night vision activation.

Do I need a managed switch for my home?

If you have fewer than 10 devices on a single floor, a smart managed switch (ES206 or ES210) is sufficient — it offers basic VLANs and monitoring without complexity. If you have multiple floors, more than 10 PoE devices, or need to separate camera traffic from your home WiFi, step up to a full L2 managed switch (NBS3100 or NBS3200) with SFP uplinks.

Do you design networks and install switches?

Yes. We design structured cabling layouts, recommend switch placement for minimal cable runs, and install everything — switches, patch panels, fiber uplinks, and cable management. WhatsApp us your floor plan and we will provide a free network design consultation with a bill of materials.
