Your cameras need power
UniFi Protect cameras are PoE powered — they draw power through the same Ethernet cable that carries video. You need a PoE switch to power them. We stock Ubiquiti, Ruijie, and Huawei PoE switches from 5 to 48 ports.

What is UniFi Protect?
UniFi Protect is Ubiquiti's video surveillance platform. It runs on UniFi NVRs (UNVR, UNVR Instant) and provides live viewing, recording, playback, and AI-powered smart detection — all managed through a single app. Unlike Ring, Nest, or Arlo, UniFi Protect stores footage locally and charges no subscription fees.
How much does the UniFi Protect subscription cost?
Zero. There is no subscription. All features — including AI person detection, vehicle detection, face recognition, license plate reading, smart alerts, and timelapse — are included free with the hardware. No monthly fees, no annual plans, no feature tiers.
How many cameras can the UNVR hold?
The UNVR supports up to 18 cameras at 4K continuous recording with 4 HDD bays (up to 80TB). The UNVR Instant supports up to 6 cameras at 4K with internal storage. For deployments exceeding 18 cameras, you can stack multiple UNVRs.
What hard drives should I use in the UNVR?
Use surveillance-rated 3.5" SATA CMR drives. Recommended: Western Digital WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk. These are designed for 24/7 recording workloads with optimised firmware for multiple video streams. Do not use standard desktop drives (WD Blue/Green) or SMR drives — they are not reliable for continuous recording.
Can I view my cameras remotely?
Yes. The UniFi Protect app (iOS, Android, web) provides remote access from anywhere. Live view, playback, and alerts work over the internet through Ubiquiti's secure remote access — no port forwarding or VPN needed. Your footage stays on your local UNVR; the app streams it to your phone on demand.
Do G5 and G6 cameras work together on the same UNVR?
Yes. All UniFi Protect cameras — G3, G4, G5, and G6 series — work together on the same UNVR. You can mix and match different models based on each location's needs. The UNVR manages all cameras through a single unified interface.
